A new disadvantage for the children in Namatala slum is being unable to access the government’s TV-based learning programmes during the Covid 19 lockdown. To overcome the problem, teachers are making home-learning visits to the Primary 7 learners, who are due to take their primary leaving exam at the end of the year.

Results for the 2019 exam were released last week, and this has been another good year for Child of Hope. All 29 pupils passed their important Primary Leaving Exam, seven in division one and the remaining 22 in division two.

Revising for exams during school holidays isn’t always easy in the Namatala slum, especially if your whole family lives in one room, or there’s no electricity. So, when Moses (a former CoH pupil) wanted to study for his O-levels with his friends from Mbale Senior Secondary School, we made a classroom available in our primary school.

The children at Child of Hope School are not only good at academics but many excel in extra-curricular activities like athletics too. Primary students recently participated in an inter-schools athletic competition and we got a glimpse of their special talents.
