Hilda, in Primary 4 at Child of Hope school, happily takes responsibility for helping with the family’s agricultural ventures while school remains closed.
She lives with her parents and two younger brothers in Namatala slum. They have a small amount of land around their home, where their father is growing an improved variety of mushroom that requires a lot of attention.
Hilda helps with the sorting and planting of mushroom spawn (the brown compost-like stuff in the picture!). Each morning and evening she checks on their progress, watering them as they grow. She is pleased to help her father as she knows when the harvest begins, the profit from selling the mushrooms helps the entire family.
