In response to findings of poor nutrition in some children, the Child of Hope health department invited a nutritionist to talk with parents of those most affected.
A recent BMI survey, that was carried out on Child of Hope children alongside other children in the community, revealed that some were not doing as well as other local youngsters. The worst affected were children in the youngest nursery class.
The health team investigated the reasons and found some had unbalanced diets with insufficient proteins and vitamins. Other families were eating too late so that the younger children were asleep in bed before the evening meal.
A nutritionist from the Joint Clinical Research Centre in Mbale taught the parents about alternative healthy foods that would help build their children’s bodies. She encouraged them to feed the children earlier so they would not miss vital meals. The health team assisted the nutritionist by preparing sample foods.
